SARAI MARI : NY Book Launch and Photo Exhibition

OnCanal gallery space is delighted to announce our upcoming exhibition, Delusion, a solo show celebrating the release of photographer SARAI MARI’s 3rd book in NYC.

Sarai Mari is a Japanese fashion photographer who has worked in New York, London, and Tokyo. After beginning her career as a photojournalist, Mari transitioned to fashion photography; her work appearing in the likes of Interview Magazine and Vogue Japan shooting the likes of Adele, Tom Hiddleston, Scarlett Johansson, and late Amy Winehouse.

Much of her work is inspired by Helmut Newton for his erotically charged representations of strong women. Mari’s book Naked, a monograph of female nudes published in 2011, is the culmination of two years working around the subject of femininity and female sexuality, the book is suffused with Mari’s provocative interpretation of female strength.

In March 2017, Mari released her second book via Damiani Books, Speak Easy, inspired by gender roles men and women play within society. By celebrating all notions of gender and sexuality, the previously defined terms fall away. They lose their meaning; and there is nothing left but the raw expression of the subject in the image.

Mari’s 3rd book Delusion has just been released via publisher THOUSAND, inc in Tokyo Japan. Mari’s dream to have world class art director Fabien Baron make this book has come true. Delusion is focused on Mari’s confusion, phobia, paranoia and fantasy. What is the meaning of our existence and the world we live in? Mari’s delusion series will rise up. One after the other.
